February 05, 2012
This Sunday at RPC
Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength.
They shall mount up with wings like eagles.
They shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.
I can't hear these words without remembering the scene in the movie Chariots of Fire, when Olympic runner Eric Liddell reads Isaiah 40 from the pulpit instead of running an Olympic heat on the Sabbath, a decision that he knows will put him out of the contest. Or you may think of the song by Michael Joncas that you hear at weddings, funerals and many times in between, with the refrain, "And He will raise you up on eagles' wings..." Isaiah's powerful words go right to the vulnerable heart of us. The message is that our God lifts us up when we are down. But what if we forget? Come to church Sunday for a meditation on how not to forget who we are and who God is. We'll sing "God of Grace and God of Glory" and "Be Thou My Vision". The youth choir and chancel choir will combine voices for "Gather Round the Table of the Lord", before we share the bread and wine of communion.
This is Scout Sunday. It is the hundredth anniversary of Girl Scouting this year; the Boy Scouts' centennial was just 2 years ago and our Troop 240's history with our congregation goes back almost that long. As is our tradition, the 2012 Eagle Scout candidates will read the scripture, as will Girl Scouts receiving patches this Sunday.
A week from Sunday, February 12, the Annual Meeting of the Congregation will take place. Please plan to be on hand for this important and informative meeting. Finally, there are only 3 Sundays left before Lent begins. Look for announcements of our Mardi Gras Pancake Supper on Tuesday, February 22, followed the next night by Ash Wednesday worship. Details will be on the church website, www.riverdalepc.org.
Blessings, Nadine
